The Snowy Day

The little hummer made it through another cold night - he was here bright and early for his breakfast. Unfortunately, the sugar-water froze during the night and he just buzzed around and finally lit on a branch til I figured out what the problem was. Then I trounced out in my bathrobe and as quickly as possible unfroze it and put fresh sugar-water in it. All the while I was doing this, he was buzzing around waiting. As soon as I got it filled and put back into position, there he was, drinking his fill.

I also had to de-ice the bird bath and knock all the snow off the feeders and throw more seed down on the ground. This last snow covered everything, even under the trees, so I just spread seeds and nuts and peanuts out on the snow. The birds and squirrels appeared like magic and had quite a feast for about an hour. There were House Finches, Golden-crowned Sparrows, Bush Tits, Northern Flickers, Steller's Jays, Chickadees, Juncos, one lone American Robin and one Spotted Towhee.

I was so glad to see the Towhee, I have been trying to entice him back into the yard. He's been missing for a while and I do love the Towhees. I saw a picture on Flickr of a Varied Thrush in the snow here in the Pacific Northwest in someone's back yard and I was so jealous. My Thrushes have not returned this year - last year I had about five of them and I think they are so pretty and I love their call - so distinctive. I miss them. Perhaps, they'll come back . . . I hope so.
